Pizza Brunch and Veggie Questions

I eat pizza and ice cream every Tuesday. It's a little ritual I've enjoyed for years. Previously, it involved a massive dose of dairy fat. I would have a thin crust cheese and tomato pizza and chase it with a Blue Bunny Champ cone or a single-serving container of Ben & Jerry's. This week, I was a little apprehensive about whether plant food could cut it as a special treat. I should not have worried one bit. This Amy's Roasted Vegetable pizza was eye-rolling delicious! It's mushroom, sweet onion and roasted red pepper in kind of a smoky roasted tomato sauce.

The crust was awesome. I cooked the pizza directly on the oven rack, making the crust crisp on the outside and warm bread yummy on the inside. If I'd eaten this in a blindfolded taste test, I don't think I would have noticed the missing cheese. It was just good. I'm going to buy more of these because I'm positive my non-health nut husband will love them.

I chased my pizza with some dark chocolate Coconut Bliss. It was also rich and delicious and did not disappoint. I learned that you're supposed to take it out of the freezer 5-10 minutes before serving, which makes sense because, even though it has a high fat content, it seems to freeze a little harder than dairy ice cream. Once it gets a bit melty, wow! It's really extra creamy and good.

So, this completes my first week with no animal products except for a handful of milk chocolate M&Ms. I've been adding more plant foods to the What I Eat page. Check out the Scooby snack. That pic cracks me up. I swear I'm going to grow up one day. :-)

I've been getting lots of questions.

Are you hungry? No. I'm not restricting my food intake in any way, so if I feel hungry I eat. I've been eating three or four times per day and feeling great.

Are you getting fat? Not yet. LOL According to that wacky Tanita scale, my weight is completely stable but my body fat percentage is dropping.

Are you bloated and puffy? Again, not yet. :-D The Tanita hydration readings are running about 3% higher than they do when I'm eating meat. A typical bodybuilding protein and vegetables day is probably a little dehydrating - the "lean out" phenomenon. By eating all plants, I'm fully hydrated and carrying a full glycogen stockpile. I'm enjoying the complete lack of water fluctuations. No false celebration when the scale drops 3 pounds after a low-carb meat and veggies day, no false drama when it bounces back up after pizza brunch.

Are you getting enough protein? I'm getting enough protein to look and feel good and train hard. I may not be getting enough protein to create big ripped bodybuilding arms, but I don't want those anymore so it's all cool.

What happened to being a no-rules happy eater? I am having a BLAST with this. There are no rules, I'm not counting anything, I'm not on a diet, I'm not hungry, and the moment it's not fun anymore, I'll be sure to head for the nearest steak house.

I thought you said soy was evil? I still think that loading up on soy phytoestrogens is a bad idea. I wouldn't eat soy every day or at every meal, but I don't see an occasional (like once or twice a week) veggie burger or serving of tofu as a plateful of poison. I did find frozen veggie burgers with no soy. Amy's California Burgers and Sunshine Burgers. I haven't tried either one yet, but they're on my grocery list. The Engine 2 Diet has a couple of veggie burger recipes using black beans or lentils as the base. As soon as I persuade someone to cook those for me, I'll let you know what I think.

What if The China Study is an evil plot written by a bad man with a hidden agenda? I don't care. The food's good. :-) My primary concern is my own lunch/fun/fitness. I remember when I was a new vegetarian how passionate I was, and how hard I tried to convince everyone that my way was right. And I remember when I was a born-again carnivore, how I did the same damn thing taking the opposite side! Now, I don't care if you're vegan or paleo or flexitarian or locavore (new word I learned). You can be an intuitive eater, a competitive bodybuilder, a Weight Watcher, a binge eater, or an obsessive dieter. I love you all and I'm so happy to hang out with you here in cyberspace. Big hug.

Hey Sqwigg, love your blog! I can't wait to try that Amy's no-cheese pizza now, and just wanted to say you're in for a treat with the California Burgers. They are delish. Thanks for all the great info! xo

Amy's California Burgers are my favorite veggie burgers.  My kids fight over them.

I am mostly vegan with a lot of raw fruits and veg in the warmer months.  Once it gets colder I tend to feel like I need more substantial food, so that's what I do.  It's great to be able to tune out all of the food noise and just listen to your body and give it what it wants.

Enjoy your vegan eating!

Oh - and please don't grow up. ;) What fun would that be?

Skwigg, my not into healthy eating sons (16 & 22) love Amy's Veggie pizza! Those Sunshine Burgers are the bomb...absolutely delicious! I recently introduced my sons to them and they were a big hit.

Question: Are you still practicing nutrient timing rules (starchy carbs post workout only) ala PN or are you eating them whenever the mood strikes?

PS. do you have a recipe for the cucumber hummus?

Alexandra - On Precision Nutrition, with my body type and activity level, I could have starchy carbs at any meal and sugary carbs post-workout. I don't follow any rules right now, but I still use my nutrition smarts. Like, I know if I have waffles, maple syrup and orange juice for breakfast, I'll fall asleep sitting up an hour later, so I tend not to do things like that. But if I want a sandwich with two pieces of bread plus a piece of fruit, or a snack like popcorn and grapes, I just have it. I don't care what time it is or what I balance it with.

I think I posted this somewhere as a comment, but the killer cucumber hummus is locally made and I get it at the grocery store. I could eat a whole vat of it, so it's probably best that I don't know how to make it.

I had to go back and check, but yes it was YOU who got me hooked on Eckhart Tolle. Just finished it a few weeks ago after having it sit on the shelf for a year. Totally zen regards EVERYTHING now. Do you think your relaxed attitude can still be contributed to it, 18 months later, or are the other food books to blame?

Just curious--do you take calcium supplements to make up for your lack of dairy?

Mel - I hadn't even thought about it but you're right! My ability to be in the moment and be happy came straight from Eckhart Tolle, and maybe a little Byron Katie too. Before reading their books, I was always off in my head someplace wrapped up in imaginary drama. Like my whole day would go by, and I'd miss it because I was counting calories, planning meals, and stressing about past (or imaginary future) events. That was my reality, and when I was all wrapped up in it I couldn't step back and see that it was nonsense.

So, yes! Major props to Eckhart for my ability to just BE.

Still, I know people who read the same books at the same time and it had zero impact on their thoughts and behaviors, or they had the zen calm for like a week, intellectually understood what Eckhart was saying, but then went right back to the non-stop negative brain chatter. So, I guess it's not enough to just read it. Mentally, you have to be ready to knock your brain hamster off its wheel. :-)

Nat - I've always taken calcium/D because I have a knack for breaking bones. (I also have a knack for tearing tendons and needing stitches and stuff, but they don't have a pill for that.)

There's calcium in lots of things other than dairy - spinach, broccoli, almond milk, black beans, wraps, fortified orange juice, etc.. It all adds up, and is probably sufficient, but I'll keep taking the supplements too.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through The China Study - whoa, it's VERY convincing.  I'm generally fine with omitting meat from my diet, but eliminating dairy will be difficult for me.  I also have a bad habit of loading up on bread when I go meatless, and that ends up packing on pounds (even if I eat whole grain bread).  But those are things I can work on.

In all fairness, a week or two isn't long enough to determine whether you're getting enough protein to "look good, feel good and train hard."  It's also not long enough to know whether there are deficits in any other nutrients - calcium, vitamin D, B-12.

Whatever floats your boat :) - but a week isn't any kind of confirmation of safety or satiety.

Glynis, it's true that more than a week is needed to evaluate a diet. Everyone should get various blood tests at their physicals. But I personally nearly always get over 100% RDA calcium and iron on my vegan diet because I eat a lot of greens, and I can be pretty sure the calcium is absorbed in the summer since I get lots of D via the sun. Winter I do supplement, and I do take B12 now and then since it's only reliably in animal or fortified foods (I do take in the latter). My levels have been good for years, but I do agree people should get them checked.

But plant foods also have loads of anti-disease phytonutrients that aren't in animal foods; that's something hard to measure. But the science is pretty clear--phytonutrients aren't a guarantee, but extremely protective!

Glynis, so you don't worry about my floating boat sinking...

- I've taken a multivitamin and calcium/D supplement for years.

- My protein intake hasn't changed since last fall's chicken rebellion when I decide 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight per day was gagging overkill.

- I've been eating "mostly monkey food" (plant-based, little dairy, meat only once or twice a week) for 8 months now.

-The main things I cut out this week were pizza cheese, butter and ice cream. Seriously, do people need more of those? :-)

If I develop some kind of crippling butter deficiency, I'll be sure to report. And again, I'm not saying any of this is permanent, but I was already skipping down the plant path, and if muscle dudes like Jason Ferruggia, John Berardi and Craig Ballantyne have gone vegan or are giving vegan a whirl, why can't I? (LOL I know, if your friends jumped off a building...)

thanks for the pizza review -- i've always been curious. i keep trying to go vegan, but i end up od'ing on soy products. i am, however, in love with unsweetened chocolate almond breeze milk. 40 calories/cup. i make my oatmeal in it :-)

if you really want to have some fun, i suggest you check out any of isa chandra moskovitz's vegan cookbooks (i'd start with vegan with a vengeance) -- you might find things to tweak -- and, if nothing else, she's pretty durn funny.

...well, then again, you might want to avoid her cookbook vegan cupcakes take over the world. you already have that cadbury addiction; you don't need to add new habits ;-)

(no, i'm not related to her. just like her cookbooks.)

Glynis, I have a close-up picture of a grasshopper my husband is holding between his thumb and forefinger. I almost put it on the What I Eat page just to see if people were paying attention. I may still do it if I get slap happy.

i'm really happy to see people experimenting with plant-based eating. my number one reason for going vegan wasn't health or animal cruelty related, although they are important to me too and are nice side effects. i am mostly concerned with environmental issues. the U.N. published a report that evaluates "that livestock are responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, a bigger share than that of transport" for the current status of greenhouse gas emmissions visit the climate doomsday clock

Hi Skwigg, Forgot to ask about something you mentioned in the original China Study post. How are those banana tacos, and what do you put in them? I can kind of get my head around them, but I seem to be having mental trouble with the squishy banana meeting the chewy tortilla - just doesn't seem right. Anyway I'd love to hear your opinion about that.

Who needs the cheese???

D - Still love Pepsi Max but I've cut way back.

Perrine - The banana tacos are soft and chewy like a peanut butter sandwich. I've only made PB, blueberry & banana so far. PB raspberry and bananna would be good too.

Tracey - It's just eggs. You know, the kind that come out of chickens? Like two of them, in a pan with some cheese. :-) I don't do the low-fat egg white fake cheese microwave stuff. I think I melted some Havarti cheese on the ones in the picture. Scramble them then put some cheese slices on them. Good! You know, for non-plant food that I don't eat lately... LOL

Thanks for the egg recipe..sorry..must of had way to much caffeine when I wrote that:)

BTW: I think you have the ideal female body. Serious,I'd love to have your figure. Goes to show you can enjoy your food and have a great figure..go figure..who would have thought! I'm really happy things are going well for you as of late. You inspire a lot of women.

Renee, please just take your calipers out and tell us your bf.  It doesn't take more than 5 minutes.  I'm betting it's up to 19%

for the cucumber hummus:  I make cucumber raita which is grated cucumbers squeezed really hard to remove as much water as possible and then added to yogurt.  cuc hummus would add cuc to hummus instead.  lots of recipes for ordinary hummus, and lots of variations depending on kind of beans, how much oil you want to add etc.

An evil plot? I love that comment! Some days I wonder myself if there is just a hidden vegan agenda or is it real? I know when I tell other people I am eating vegan most of the time, they roll their eyes, think I am nuts and worry that I am going to be sick and unhealthy. So I just don't bother telling most people anymore. I just eat what I enjoy when I'm hungry. It is liberating loving the food I eat and feeling good.

I've had some folks scoff at the whole idea of a plant based diet, but then they eat KFC and McDs all the time. Makes no freaking sense to me!

I can understand how it seems unreasonable to be crazy restrictive but here is what I have to say: eating my old way felt more restrictive (no carbs except PWO?). I truly enjoy the foods I eat. I don't sweat the small stuff (If some eggs are hidden in the bread, etc etc, I don't go on a vegan rant).

At the end of the day, a diet that includes a lot of fresh veg, fruit, beans, and grains can't be a bad thing! Isn't it just common sense?

So while shopping today I found a personal size Amy's Roasted Veggie Pizza. Since I was on a quest for Coconut Bliss Ice Cream, it just seemed right to give it a try.

OMG.

Just WOW. That is some darned awesome pizza. I don't even care that there's no cheese. And I do adore my cheese. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Follow that up with the Chocolate Hazelnut Coconut Bliss...I think this is one of the BEST 10 percent meals I've done in ages.

Points for advanced plant monkey food!

*Up* to 19%!? Was it lower before? I can understand why someone might want to go below 19%, but I would think 19 is plenty low for most women. Wow... I tend to agree with Josh. Plus, I love my A cups, but they would completely disppear at such low levels.
