The Bunny Barricade

There is a rabbit that lives in our yard, a deranged, fearless, dog-taunting rabbit. She will sit and eat clover with slobbering (apparently blind) dogs three feet away. If the dogs do manage to spot her and chase her, she can run straight through chain link fence like a freaking terminator. As soon as the dogs look away or lie down, she's back.

Today we noticed that this bold bunny was building a nest in the middle of the yard. She dug a deep hole, lined it with fur and grass, and is apparently planning to have babies RIGHT THERE in dog central. Hoping to avoid a bloody massacre, we built a security fence for her. It's not much to look at but it should protect her from both the dogs and the lawnmower. Behold the engineering marvel! LOL

Can momma bunny get in and out, you think? That's a daring choice to pick - guess she wants her litter to grow up tough.

The squares at the bottom are big enough for her to walk through. So, I think it will be cool. Hopefully, the metal monstrosity doesn't scare her away. She seems to be oblivious to people, dogs and fences. She sat a few feet away eating some greenery and watching me build it.

Nothing can happen to her now or I'm going to freak. I just had a flashback to the cute little squirrel baby that we watched playing in the yard for weeks... until Nigel murdered it and brought it to me. I ran shrieking and crying and he chased me with the carcass. ROFL Hopefully, we're not going to do THAT again!

Crazy rabbit!  The bunnies here are stupidly bold, too...but they are far faster than my Moogie & Freckles.  They keep making such great nests that dh almost finds them with the lawnmower.  After one such tragedy, he now mows with extreme caution.

We have a rabbit that does the same in our yard. We have had several litters of bunnies over the past three years and each time we have to put up some type of barricade so that they don't get run over with the lawn mower. We have taught Autumn that she cannot chase the bunnies. She seems to understand, and has yet to harm a baby bunny.

Awww, that is sooo cute! We used to have a bunny that looked similar to that---from what I can see of the brownish blob, LOL.  It's unusual for rabbits in the wild to be so unafraid of people, though....do you think it was a pet that someone let loose?

Haha, I think the 'brownish blob' is the hole that the bunny has dug?

Aw, you guys are true animal lovers.  It makes me all warm and squishy that you would do this for a little bunny rabbit.

Love the sticks!

Good luck keeping the bunnies all safe and cozy!

It kills me to post this, but my bunny construction project had a catastrophic failure. I walked outside last night and Sam had bulldozed the fence down. She was standing in the middle of the bunny barricade EATING them! Oh the HORROR! Bad dog! Bad!!!

There were three fatalities. The good news is that there are at least three more baby bunnies who are fine. And they're pretty big so they should be able to leave the nest and run for their lives soon, hopefully far, far from dogville. I've double reinforced the fence and the dogs are no longer allowed outside at all unless they have adult supervision.

Fingers crossed.

OMG That is SO cute! How amazingly fearless can you get? LOL

I don't think she would have gotten away with that if Nigel were there.

Yikes. I should learn to read the comments BEFORE posting mine, eh?
